Named in the late 1840's by Sir Stuart Donaldson after a family home in Scotland.
Donaldson later became the first Premier of New South Wales and was the last man in Australia to
fight a duel. Tenterfield sits astride the Great Dividing Range at the Northern Gateway to New South Wales and the glorious New England region. This area offers a contrast of rugged mountain beauty and the serenity of rural landscapes. Known as the 'Birthplace of Federation' because it was here Sir Henry Parkes presented his 'Vision of a Nation' speech in October 1889 outlining the formation of a federation, Tenterfield boasts many unique historical and natural features and offers visitors a wide variety of activities including bushwalking and camping in Bald Rock and Boonoo Boonoo Falls National Parks, fishing at Glenlyon Dam or just enjoying the historical buildings and walks in the town. Made famous in the 'Tenterfield Traveller' song written and performed by one of Tenterfield's favourite sons, the late Peter Allen. PLACES OF INTEREST: Built around 1874 the complex still operates. Built in 1885 and completely restored it has an unique glass ceiling. Built in 1888 by mining magnate John Reid and used as a military hospital during WW11. Over a century old. Classified by the National Trust in 1972 and the subject of Peter Allen's song, it was operated by his grandfather George Woolnough for over 50 years. Open Mon-Fri from 9am to 5pm. A collection of historic cottages housing galleries, and material related to the Tenterfield area. Over 1500 dolls on display. Opened in 1886. Striking rock formations.
