Walpole takes its name from the nearby Walpole River, named after Captain W. Walpole of the HMS Warspite' by Governor Stirling, with whom he had served in 1808. It is at the northern edge of the Walpole Inlet, a popular water recreation area, and near the Valley of the Giants Tree-top Walk in the Walpole-Nornalup National Park.
The region is famous for the giant Tingle and Karri forests and is on the Bibbulmun Track, a long distance walking track between Albany and Kalamunda of around 1,000km.
The first settlers to the area arrived in 1909 and the town was gazetted in 1933.
