Once a busy gold town it lies at the centre of a vast pastoral region.
Gazetted in 1911 as a town it is now little more than a roadhouse stop along the
highway.
It is named after Thomas Payne who found gold and registered a claim there resulting in
a mini goldrush. In the 1930s the township had a population of around 500 and its own
gold stamper battery, the only operational one still in existence in Western Australia.
