At the centre of a grain and wool producing area it takes its name
from the aboriginal for 'Place of the male kangaroo'.
The mallee fowl is found around Ongerup. This rare species lays its eggs in an
earth mound to be hatched by the warmth of the sun.
There is a museum in the old railway barracks (1918) in Eldridge St, There is a pub,
caravan park, general store and a primary school and kindergarten.
