Historic town originally rich in copper and called The Mines, it was gazetted as
a town in 1864 and named after the then Governor John Hampton.
The Hutt River Province - a self appointed Duchy is nearby and has memorabilia to
collect including stamps and coins. There are aboriginal cave paintings at Bowes River.
The first railway in Western Australia was between Perth and Northampton, indicating
its importance as a copper and lead producer in its early days.
