At the mouth of the Murchison river it was established in 1951 and is now a popular holiday resort servicing visitors to the nearby Kalbarri National Park.
The first Europeans to visit the area were the crew of the Dutch East India trading ship the Batavia, who deposited two mutinous crew members near Bluff Point just south of the town.
The cliffs near the river mouth were named after another trading ship, the Zuytdorp, wrecked there in 1712.
The area became a popular fishing and tourist spot in the 1940s and by 1948 the state government declared a townsite. It was gazetted in 1951.
Things to do include a visit to the Pelican Feeding, a charter cruise on the Murchison River, the Rainbow Jungle parrot display and the fabulous Kalbarri National PArk.
