Established in 1904 it is a prime grain and sheep farming area.
The name Gnowangerup comes from the aboriginal 'Ngow', meaning Malleefowl.
The Shire is located 360km from Perth and 140km from Albany via Chester Pass Rd. and
occupies approximately 5,000 square kms. Predominately grain growing and sheep production,
it includes the towns of Gnowangerup, Borden and Ongerup and the Stirling Range National
Park.
Things to see abd visit include the many historical buildings,
the Mineral Springs near the pool, and the 3 metre high statue of Ned Kelly in
front of the hotel. A major attraction
is the Machinery Museum on the corner of the Strathaven and Yougenup Road, the Steam
Tractor in front of the Shire building, the Gnowangerup Historic Centre, the Old
Gnowangerup Cemetery, the Wildflower Reserve and Mary's Rock.
