Originally named Port Esperance after one of French Admiral Bruni
D'Entrecasteaux ships in 1792, who also named the islands in the
bay Faith, Hope and Charity it saw a boom in the 1850s when timber
milling became popular.
over is an important staging point for visitors to the Hastings Caves and
Thermal Springs, the Ida Bay railway, and Cockle Creek, the most southerly road
in Australia.
