Suburb of Sydney - City of Willoughby
Willoughby is an established residential area with large homes on large blocks of land, well protected by the development of public transport corridors such as those near Chatswood and Artarmon rail stations.
The area was named by explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell after his friend and former superior officer, Sir James Willoughby Gordon, in the 18th century.
Development dates from the 1850s when 600 acres of land were subdivided, auctioned, and named the' Township of North Sydney'.
Until the early 1900s land was used mainly for orchards, market gardens, dairy farms and some tanneries. The opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932 created interest in the North Shore and the post-war years saw significant growth.
North Willoughby and Willoughby East are residential areas adjacent to Willoughby and come under the City of Willoughby Council.
