Founded in 1892 after the discovery of gold, Coolgardie was once the third largest town
in Western Australia after Perth and Fremantle with a population in excess of 15,000.
Today it is a shadow of its former self and the concentration is on tourism.
At its peak, some 700 mining companies were based in Coolgardie and registered in London, and the wealth
which came provided facilities such as a swimming pool, newspapers, a railway (1896), and many
businesses and services for the thriving community.
Many of the magnificent buildings which were established in its heyday remain and the
School of Mones and Coolgardie Warden's Court are fine examples.
