Originally named Coalville to reflect the massive amounts of coal mined here, it has been known as Collie since 1897 when it was declared a town. there are two open cut and one underground mines producing over 3 million tonnes per year.
It is named after the river on which it is situated. James Stirling named the Collie River after Dr Alexander Collie who with William Preston were the first Europeans to explore the area in 1829.
George Marsh found coal in the area in the early 1880s and the coalfields were developed in the late 1890s. The townsite wassurveyed and gazetted in 1897.
