RENMARK:- A Brief History An irrigation settlement was established at Renmark in 1887 after an agreement between the Canadian born Chaffey brothers, and the South Australian government. Thirty thousand acres were granted to the Chaffeys to initiate the venture, and vineyards and fruitblocks soon spread throughout the area. The Renmark Irrigation Trust was established in 1893 to supply water to growers, and played an important role in the administration and government of the region until the present Corporation was formed in 1960. The principal products of the area are stone-fruits for both canning and drying, citrus, wine grapes, vegetables, wheat and wool. The town has developed as an important regional centre for business and commerce, and has extensive recreational and sporting facilities to cater for the needs of locals and visitors. The Renmark Tourist Centre was established by the council, and is subsidised by the community; both financially, and through interested volunteers manning the centre at weekends. It provides information and booking services for the region, sells souvenirs, and co-ordinates convention facilities. The Community Recreation Centre offers areas for indoor cricket, basketball, and other sports, and has a 16m. heated pool, a large walk-in sauna, and hydro-therapy spa. The Renmark Swimming and Leisure Centre in Cowra St. has a full size Olympic pool, learners and toddlers pools, and is open from the end of October until the end of March. The Renmark Golf Course is one of the finest country courses in South Australia and has a motel complex on site. There are also 3 bowling clubs, a small bore rifle club, horse and pony club, and a rowing club. Scenic flights are conducted by the Renmark Gliding Club and other aircraft operators.
