Located on the Bremer River, Ipswich is Queensland's oldest regional city. It was established
as a convict outpost to quarry limestone in 1827 and the first settlers arrived in 1842, three
years after the closing of the quarries. There are Heritage walks and Canoe trails and a steam railway to see and the Queens Park Nature park is open from Wednesday to Sunday featuring wildlife and gardens. Ipswich was originally called limestone but the name was changed in 1842 and named after the city in Suffolk, England which better reflected its attractive setting, particularly after the mining of limestone ceased. Today mining is for coal and te industry is a large employer. It is also well known for the earthenware pottery industry and timber production. The first railway line in Queensland was begun at Ipswich in 1864 and this history is remembered in the Workshops Rail Museum in North St. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES: |
