Dirranbandi is a town in South West Queensland, in the Shire of Balonne.
on the Castlereagh Highway and Balonne River, 60km
north of the New South Wales Border. Seasonal cotton workers come to work on the extensive cotton fields annually and swell the population well beyond its normal 400. Due to the low annual rainfall, irrigation is used extensively. Cubbie Station, the largest cotton producing property in the southern hemisphere, is close to Dirranbandi. The name is believed to come from the aboriginal word for 'swamp with frogs and waterfowl'. Facilities include a public library, civic centre, swimming pool, park and showground.
