YORK - WESTERN AUSTRALIA |
Located in the Avon Valley, York is Western Australia's oldest inland town
(1831) and is heritage listed. It was first settled in response to the need for farmland to feed the young colony. Convicts were introduced into the town in 1851-1872 to help develop the district. Later the town became a staging post for gold seekers on their way to the goldfields. Many fine buildings were erected in the early days and they still stand today. Nowadays York is the home for Festivals and Exhibitions. The Antiques and Collectors Fair, the Jazz Festival, the Festival of Fine Music, a number of Vintage Car Festivals, a Gourmet Sausage Festival, an Art & Craft Exhibition, a Photographic Exhibition and a Spring Garden Festival are just a few of the annual events in York. An impressive Motor Museum, the Residency Museum and Jahroc Mill Gallery where jarrah furniture is made and displayed along with other arts and crafts are some of the attractions not to be missed in York. Another attraction is skydiving conducted near the town. York is a popular destination for travellers seeking the peace and tranquillity of the Avon Valley, the excitement of the Festivals or to explore some of Western Australia's historical heritage.
