GERALDTON - WESTERN AUSTRALIA |
Geraldton calls itself the 'Lobster Capital of the World', and is the commercial and touring
centre of the mid-west. As the gateway to the north of Western Australia it is a major export centre for vast pastoral, agricultural and mining industries and is a significant fishing port. It was surveyed in 1842 and the first town blocks were sold in 1843. It was also the state's first regional railway terminal built by the government between Geraldton and Northampton. Geraldton was declared a city in 1988 by Queen Elizabeth 11 on a visit. Among the popular activities are swimming, diving and wind-surfing. In spring wildflower tours operate into the hinterland and throughout the year scenic flights operate along the coast to Monkey Mia and Shark Bay.
