DAMPIER WESTERN AUSTRALIA |
Major seaport in the north of the state servicing the northwest shelf oil rigs and iron
shipments from the inland towns of Paraburdoo, Tom Price and Brockman. The port has the
largest tonnage of any Australian port. It is on the Dampier Archipelage, a collection of over 40 islands, modestly named by Capt. William Dampier in 1688 which have a varied history including pearling, whaling and shipwrecks. Fishing and diving are popular recreations around Dampier and there are some spectacular aboriginal rock carvings on the nearby Burrup Peninsula.
