CARNARVON WESTERN AUSTRALIA |
Carnarvon is at the mouth of the Gascoyne River, some 200 km. north of the Shark Bay
World Heritage Area on the North West Coastal Highway. Rich and fertile bananas and citrus fruits are the main produce and it is an ideal place to stock up on fresh supplies if you are travelling further north. Fishing from the atractive inlet known as "The Facine" is a popular past-time as is shopping and exploring the Gascoyne Region. Offshore you an see humpback whales which frequent the area in winter, and if you make the time, you can enjoy a ride on the old steam locomotive 'The Babbage Island Express'. Just north of Carnarvon (73km.) is Point Quobba where you can see blow-holes in the spectacularly rugged coastline and a cairn to the "HMAS Sydney" which was sunk with all hands during the second world war. Rocky Pool is a popular fresh-water billabong and swimming hole 56 kilometres east along the river.
