Dense beech and hardwood forest and productive farmland make up the lovely area of Smithton. Smithton's clean, fertile land and waters makes for prosperous timber, dairy farming, fishing and vegetable production industries. This is the administrative centre of Circular Head and its economy is based on dairying and timber. Fishing and vegetable production and processing are also important to the economy. Smithton also has the largest dolomite deposits in the Commonwealth. It was named by Bass and Flinders in their explorations of 1798 and was the first settlement in the north west, taken up by the van Dieman's Land Company. Their property, Woolnorth, to the west of Smithton, is now a tourist attraction and has a gigantic wind-farm operated by Hydro Tasmania. The Allendale Gardens, south of Smithton are one of the finest in Tasmania and there is a cafe with tea, coffee and Devonshire Teas available. What to see and do: Inspect the Kauri Timber Mill and Lacrum Dairy Farm, travel to Allendale Gardens at Edith Creek (16km), take a tour to the far north-west and the historic farming property. 'Woolnorth', fly to off-shore islands, drive through the South Forest or visit the Milkshake Hills Forest Reserve (45km). Possum Trot Rainforest Walk at Redpa and take an Arthur River Cruise.
