The beautiful old township of Ross, named in 1821 by Governor Macquarie, is a Classified
Historic Town. Ross is a properous wool growing district, the fine Merino wool from Ross is sought after all over the world. In the past Ross was an important military post, coach change depot and stock market but today its major pupose is to service the surrounding rural area and to accommodate and provide facilities for tourists. A prime reason for visitors calling here is to see structures and buildings from the colonial period, especially the bridge that was intricately carved by convicts and, in architectural terms, is considered to be the most important in Australia. Local properties consistently secure record prices for their superfine wool and the history of the nation's wool industry is well documented in the Tasmanian Wool Centre in the main street. What to see and Do: View the bridge detail, call at the Wool Centre and the Man O'Ross Hotel, which has been serving travellers since 1835, see treasures like the old barracks, the war memorial, Scotch Thistle Inn (1840) and mellowed churches, many of which are built of local sandstone. Conducted walking tours are available.
