Situated 166km from Hobart and 60km from Launceston or 35 minutes from the airport, Poatina takes its
name from the Aboriginal for 'cavern'. It is one of several towns established to build and support the massive
Hydro Electric Scheme of last century and is now a maintenance and service town. Located on the edge of Tasmania's breathtaking wilderness, Poatina is framed by the majestic Great Western Tiers and overlooks an endless spread of green and gold fields. It is a delightful and welcoming little town with a hotel, backpackers and 2 storey cottage accommodation, restaurant, 9 hole golf course, tennis court, swimming centre (summer), post office, on-line access, art gallery and gift shop. Poatina is also close to prime inland fishing rivers and lakes. A distinctive feature is a stunning glass monument, hand made from 100% recycled glass bricks, it portrays the Hydro past, exciting present, and future stories of the village.
