19km from Launceston the township of Perth was specially selected as a town site in
1821 by Govenor Macquarie; 15 years later it was officially proclaimed a township and
Parish. Several historic buildings will be seen. Perth is an important junction of the Midland and Bass Hwys and as such is well equipped to cater for the traveller with several service stations and cafes, takeaway food outlets, and a variety of shops. On the scenic South Esk River, fishing is a popular pastime and there are scenic drives to historic Longford and Cressy.
