First settled around 1825 when a shore station was built to serve the local garrison
and whalers, it is on the banks of the Prosser River and is a popular holiday resort with
many fishing spots, white sandy beaches and shopping. There are several restaurants including one at the western end of the bridge across the river. Orford has variety of accommodation establishments and may be used as a base for exploring Maria Island and the Wielangta State Forest Reserve. There is a 29km gravel road through the forest, from Orford to Copping, linking the East Coast with the Tasman Peninsula (Wielangta Drive). (Check local conditions before using this scenic road). What to See and Do: Visit Maria Island (ferries leave from both the Triabunna Wharf and the Eastcoaster Resort), drive to the Three Thumbs Lookout (2kms) or hike up the walking tracks, fishing and safe swimming.
