More like an island than a residential town, Midway Point is surrounded by water on three sides as
it juts out from the surrounding land into the Pitt Water between Cambridge and Sorell. Until 1866 the only road to Sorell passed north of Midway Point through Richmond. A causeway was built in 2 sections to provide a direct route Between the two towns. The western section joins Cambridge with Midway Point and the eastern section joins Midway Point with Sorell, cutting some 15km off the old trip. The town of Midway Point developed on the Peninsula separating the two causeways and it is now a thriving community with shopping centres, a hotel and accommodation. Many residents travel to Hobart for work while enjoying the seaside atmosphere of the town.
