Classified an Historic Town Longford, first settled in 1813 is one of the oldest towns
in northern Tasmania. Longford proudly displays many restored historic buildings,
some built by convict labour. Hawthorn hedges along roads leading to Longford give a hint of the town's English connections, which extend to stately homes and the rural estates, many of which were established by the 'first wave' of British settlers. Century-old inns still provide accommodation and refreshments for travellers, while other links with bygone days can be seen in public buildings and convict-built Christ Church, which is noted for a magnificent stained glass window. What to See and Do: Hunt for antiques, watch deer and other wildlife in the Longford Wildlife Park on part of the Mount Ireh property, see the Toll House, the library in a former hotel and mills that were vital when this was a major wheat growing area early last century. The nearest Tourist Information Centre is situated in Launceston. View Motor Racing Relics at the Longford Hotel.
