A short ten minute drive from Devonport is the historic town of Latrobe. Within Latrobe and its direct surrounds you will find some magnificent countryside and attractions. Woodchopping displays and museum. Latrobe is the first town you encounter between Devonport and Launceston and is just south of the highway. Located on the beautiful Mersey River with wide streets and plenty of parks and picnic areas, it is the wood-chopping capital of the world. It was here the first ever championship was held and a monument marks the spot. At the Lucas Hotel there are regular demonstrations of this energetic art and the exhibition 'Foster at the Lucas' is held daily. Latrobe has also been a 'home' to bicycle racing since 1890, with one of Australia's biggest cycling carnivals - the Latrobe Wheel Race - held there each Christmas. An outstanding new attraction opened in 2002 is the Australian Axemen's Hall of Fame in Bell's Pde beside the Mersey River honouring the legendary axemen of the area. What to see and Do: Visit the Courthouse Museum, walk or have a picnic or BBQ by the river in Bell's Parade, watch speedway racing (seasonal). Latrobe is also renowned for its fine dining. A 'Chocolate Festival' is held in August where visitors can eat, sample, throw, mould and generally totally indulge themselves in the worlds most popular product.
