Rapidly developing coastal town on the Channel Hwy south west of Hobart. Excellent beaches
and shopping. Kingston, Kingston Beach and Blackmans Bay are the largest city in The Channel area and adnministrative centre of the Kingborough Municipal Council. The city is now practically a southern suburb of Hobart and a motorway connects the two putting it only a short journey from Hobart. It has all major services and the federal government's Antarctic Research Centre is there, the headquarters for work and expeditions to the Antarctic. Kingston was originally named Browns River after Scots botanist William Brown who came to Tasmania with Governor Collins and discovered the beach at Kingston in 1804. A monument at the beach commemorates the event. At Kingston Beach there is a long golden beach with safe waters on the Derwent River. Cafes now provide comfortable outdoor seating on the foreshore where once there were but a few houses. A scenic drive takes you through Blackmans Bay, Tinderbox and Howden offering wonderful views of Bruny Island and Storm Bay from Droughty Point. There is a small blowhole in the reserve at Blackmans Bay which is worth seeing, especially during heavy seas.
