Located 195 km from Hobart, Bicheno began around 1803 as "Waubs Boat Harbour" when Whalers and
sealers used the safe harbour after a long days hunting. In 1854 coal mining
from the Denison River mines began along 7 kms of tramway pulled by horses.
Today Bicheno is an extremely popular holiday resort and boasts spectacular beaches and first
class amenitities. Fishing is excellent being a major fishing centre and home to many fishermen. Visit the grave of Wauba Debar near the tennis courts, (after whom Waub's Harbour was named), an aboriginal girl taken from her tribe as a teenager to become a 'sealer's woman'. Her bravery in rescuing two sealers in a storm is commemorated by a headstone. The town was named after James Ebenezer Bicheno, the British Colonial Secretary for Van Diemen's Land from 1843 to 1851. There is a little penguin colony on nearby Diamond Island. PLACES OF INTEREST:
