The Forest and Heritage Centre at Geeveston is the gateway to the wilderness forest
area of the south west. Diverse and fascinating it includes many displays which cover
all aspects of forestry and logging. The 'Forest Room' provides information on
timber and timber industries. There is a history of the development of the industry,
the pioneers in it, a diverse range of opinions, and interactive displays which allow
you to play a computer game or ride a scultured log truck and hear a description of a
drivers day.
Upstairs, the Hartz Gallery has an extensive range of antique wood-working machinery
featuring an 1815 treadle lathe. Exhibitions change regularly and help explain all
facets of the timber industry.
Staff are helpful and there is a craft shop near the entrance where you can see a
display of local woodcraft and there is usually a wood-turner on the premises creating
craftwork.
Open daily. 9am - 5pm.
