Lake Macquarie is a large lake touching the southern boundary of the City of Newcastle and
reaching Wyee in the south. Around its shores are the towns of Toronto, Warners Bay,
Belmont, Swansea, Morriset and Wyee.
It is reached via the Sydney - Newcastle Freeway turning off at Morriset or, from the north,
through Newcastle or the Edgeworth turn-off on the Freeway, The main north railway passes through
Morriset , Fassifern and Teralba on the eastern shore of the lake making access from Sydney or
Newcastle for those without a car, easy.
The heads of the lake are at Swansea where a bridge joins the north and south peninsulas
and this is a popular section of the lake with swimming, fishing and water-sports among
the popular activities.
Flora and Fauna reserves will be found around the lake as well as reserves and picnic areas,
golf courses, lookouts and playgrounds. Jetties and ramps for cruising and launching boats are
spread around the lake and there are sea caves at Caves Beach which is open to the South Pacific
Ocean. Operators provide charter tours of the lake and there is a water taxi.
