The Sydney Town Hall was built in the 1880s on the site of part of the adjacent old cemetery of St Andrews Cathedral in George St and includes the Council Chambers, Centennial Hall, official reception rooms, and offices of the Lord Mayor and councillors.
It was built of local sandstone to a design selected in a competition won by Tasmanian architect J.H. Willson.

A Grand Organ was built in England at a cost of £14,241 and shipped to Sydney for installation. It is the largest entirely mechanical pipe organ in the world and was first played on Saturday August 9th, 1890 with an audience of 4,000 prominent guests, by Mr W.T. Best, City Organist of Liverpool, and considered to be the finest concert organist in the world.
Free organ recitals are now held throughout the year for visitors to Sydney Town Hall to enjoy. Information about performance times can be obtained on 02 9265 9007.
