For many years one of Australia's most popular cartoons was the Ettamogah Pub series which ran in the
weekly, and now defunct, 'Australian Post' magazine. The Post was an Australian icon in itself and was published for some 50 years bringing stories, anecdotes, photographs and real Australiana to millions. The comic strip was created by an ex-policeman, the late Ken Maynard, and featured a group of local bushies who frequented the pub. There was a truck on the roof, crows wore boots because it was too hot to walk on the ground, and the blue-singletted crowd got up to all sorts of antics. In the 1980s the comic strip pub was converted into a reality when this one opened at Ettamogah, just north of Albury in New South Wales, others were built in Queensland and Western Australia. It operates as a full hotel and you can sit and enjoy the numerous bric-a-brac on the walls as you absorb the atmosphere. I have been informed the hotel is currently shut (2015), I guess the novelty has worn off a bit due to new generations being unaware of its origins. However, being only a short detour from the main highway, it is still worth a look and a photo. |
