Leslie Robert Menzies, a Canadian-born prospector, and John McDonald discovered gold
here in 1894 and began working their lease, 'The Lady Shenton', leading to the
gazetting of a town in 1895.
Rich returns led to the construction of the town hall in 1898 and the rail reached the
thriving settlement in 1900 when it boasted a population around 10,000.
The arid location led to the construction of a dam in 1901 to supply the increasing demand
for water; at its peak there were 13 hotels and two breweries in the town also helping to
quench the thirst of the miners.
The Goongarrie National Park is nearby as are several usually dry lakes.
