In the Clyde Valley north of Hobart this rural centre has been proclaimed an historic town
and has over 50 buildings classified by the National Trust dating back to 1824 when
its fine wide streets were first laid out by its Scottish forefathers. These early settlers brought with them
their own native sport - golf - and so established Australia's first recognised golf course. The course is
still in use and open to anyone holding membership in any other club. There is also a fine golf museum here,
claimed to be second only to the royal and Ancient in St. Andrews. Yet another legacy of Bothwell's founders is the excellent trout fishing (widely considered to be amongst the world's best) available in the lakes, rivers and streams which abound throughout the Municipality. Bothwell boasts some 52 classified or recognised buildings, some of which contain craftspeople; retail stores and first class accommodation, available both in the village itself and outlying areas. What to See and Do: Follow the path of history by picking up a copy of 'Let's Browse Bothwell' and take yourself on a walking tour of the village. Visit Weaving, Woodturning and Spinning Studios where the craftspeople live and work on the premises. Or perhaps view a wide range of fine crafts at St Michael's Craft Shop. Relax at Miss Ellie's or Lamont Tea Rooms and sample local fare, such as venison and trout, at the Castle Hotel. The picturesque Queens Park, the village green, offers gas BBQ's and childrens playground equipment with public amenities situated nearby. Take a drive up to the Highlands and visit the excellent Waddamanna Power Station Museum. Throw a line in at any one of the many Lakes in the Highlands and get some friendly advice from fellow fishermen at the Great Lake Hotel. PLACES OF INTEREST:
