PERTH TO DARWIN: Stage 2. Port Hedland to Katherine Via The Great Northern Highway (1) This section of National Highway 1. mainly follows the coast east from Port Hedland to Derby where it goes inland, through Halls Creek and Kununnurra to the WA/NT Border. It then becomes the Victoria Hwy (1) on to Katherine, where it joins the Stuart Highway (87) between Adelaide and Darwin Semi tropical and interesting there are some wonderful highlights at the major stops along the way The following summary of the road includes general information and links to some of the towns and attractions along the way KATHERINE: One of the Northern Territory's larger towns and stepping off point for visits to the Katherine Gorge, and the Mataranka Hot Springs, some 100km. south.
