The administrative centre
for the Shire of Balonne it was named by Major Thomas Mitchell,
who crossed the Balonne River on St George's Day, 23 April 1846. Located just north of the New South Wales border and on the Balonne River, St George calls itself 'The Inland Fishing capital of Australia' and the Beardmore Dam and Jack Taylor Weir are among popular spots to picnic and fish for Yellowbelly amd Murray Cod. Among the attractions of the town is the 'Unique Egg', a hand carved emu egg among a collection which is the life work of carver Steve Margaritis. The Riversands Vineyard has tastings and sales and you should visit the Heritage Centre and Aboriginal Bush Tucker Garden. The heritage centre contains the town's original gaol, along with a blacksmith's shop and other memorabilia.
