This outback Queensland town on the Bulloo River is at the centre of a vast cattle and
sheep grazing area founded by such legendary pioneers of the Australian cattle industry as
the Durack, Costello and Tully families. It is also well known for the opal mined at several diggings nearby especially the 'Boulder Opal'. The area around Quilpie holds the largest concentration of opals in the world. Quilpie takes its name from the aboriginal word 'quilpeta' meaning stone curlew.
