Port Douglas is a resort area north of Cairns and adjacent to the World Heritage
Daintree Forest Area and the Great Barrier Reef, it is the only place in the world where
two World Heritage areas meet. It is also where ex-President Bill Clinton played golf with
Greg Norman on an Australian visit, and is tropical, warm and lush. The town is surrounded by mountains and rainforest and faces a 4km long white beach which opens onto the Great Barrier Reef. Big Game Fishing is a popular activity and there have been some memorable catches of marlin off the coast. Port Douglas is the closest town to the Great Barrier Reef and the 65km drive from Cairns is among the most scenic in Australia. The town began in the 1870s as a supply town for the goldfields and in its heyday had 27 hotels and a population of around 12,000. Tay it is a resort town offering world class accommodation or more humble B&Bs, motels, apartments and caravan parks. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the rivers and estuaries around Port Douglas and it is not wise to swim in unknown waters. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES: |
