Magnetic Island is one of the Great Barrier Reef's most visited islands and is only a short
distance off the coast from Townsville, north of Brisbane. A 'Fast Cat' pasenger ferry to
the island operates some 10 services a day, and there is a car ferry which goes to the island
with up to 4 daily services, helicopter and small planes also operate. Mountainous and forested, the island has some 20 secluded beaches, around 25km. of walking tracks, and many panoramas over the island and reef from vantage points along the walking trails. Much of the island is a National Park and features stands of native eucalypts which are home to a large koala population. Wallabies, possums and prolific birdlife will be seen. Blue-wing kookaburras and sulphur and black cockatoos are among the 160 species of birds. Activities on the island include horse-riding, golf, bowls, snorkelling, reef and fishing tours. Of an evening there is an outdoor cinema and plenty of venues offer entertainment and the opportunity to meet new people. There are many shops, craft and art shops and restaurants. There is a local bus service to provide access to most places, and you can hire bicycles, mini-mokes, mopeds and other vehicles to help you get around. A broad range of accommodation is available ranging from back-packer and budget to full resort facilities. PLACES OF INTEREST: ACCOMMODATION & SERVICES: |
