Located in the Whitsunday Islands section of the Great Barrier Reef, 25km north east of
Shute Harbour, Hayman Island was the first of the reef islands to be developed. Interest in Hayman began with a Sydney schoolteacher, Monty Emdury, whobegan taking school excursions to the island in 1931 for scientific research. (Great work if you can get it). In 1936, author Zane Grey used the location to make his film 'White Death', but it was not until 1948 that airline founder Reginald Ansett saw the potential of the Barrier Reef and took a lease on Hayman island. He set up a resort and called it Royal Hayman and it became internationally famous as a holiday resort. It was further developed after his death by his successor at Ansett Industries, CEO Sir Peter Abeles when the present resort was built in 1985. today it is one of the world's premier holiday getaways. There are direct flights from all capital cities to adjacent Hamilton Island with a connecting launch to Hayman Island. A water taxi service operates from Airlie Beach.
