On the Warrego River Cunnamulla is at the centre of a rich sheep and cattle grazing district and
is the largest wool laoding centre on the Queensland railway network. The first European visitor to the region was Surveyor Thomas Mitchell in 1846 followed by Edmund Kennedy in 1847. Both reported excellent pastures and by 1879 a settlement was thriving with regular Cobb & Co links. Robber's Tree in Stockyard St takes its name from an occurance where bushranger Joseph Wells robbed the local bank but could not find his horse to make his getaway. The locals bailed him up in the tree and he was apprehended. Extensive wetlands of the river provide a haven for migratory water birds and many species will be seen including brolgas and black swans.
