Barcaldine is the home of the Australian Labor Party which was formed after a shearers strike in
1891, and a subsequent meeting under the 'Tree of Knowledge', a Ghost Gum in Oak St. The Australian Workers Heritage Centre in Ash St. features buildings containing tributes to Australian workers around Burnsey's Lagoon, in landscaped gardens... but enough said about the party which broke Australia in the early 1970's under Gough Whitlam. Mad Mick's Hoppers and Huts Funny Farm has 8 settlers buildings of great interest at the corner of Pine & Bouhinia Sts. (All the streets in Barcaldine are named after trees), including a Cobb & Co. office and and old shearing sheds with wool presses. There are many National Trust classified buildings, and a mini-steam train operates between March and October on the last Sunday of the month, (which is sometimes a little more regularly than Melbourne's unionised public transport). Things to visit around Barcaldine include: The Marraroo Gallery, displaying contemporary and aboriginal works located 1km. west; the Wondae Deer Farm, 1 km. west, with hand feeding of the animals and a Kiddies Corner Botanical Walk. 9km. south.; and 32km. east is a working outback station. Delta Station provides an opportunity to see how a real station operates and do some bushwalking amongst the prolific wildlife and flora, it has some accommodation.
