Atherton is at the hub of the rich agricultural area known as the Atherton Tableland, and is
surrounded by rainforest. Potatos, tomatos, avocados and peanuts are among the crops which thrive
in the fertile basalt soil of one of Australia's oldest land regions. Places to visit in the town include the Old Chinese Joss House and the Old Post Office Gallery in Herbertson St. A display of gems and a network of underground tunnels are a feature of the Crystal Caves mineral museum in Main St. and Fascinating Facets also has gem displays. Nearby there is much to do. Volcanic crater lakes and waterfalls, surrounded by rain-forest are a delight to explore. Bushwalking trails will be found at many places including Halloran Hill, (3km. east), Baldy Mountain (10km. south-west), and in the Wongabel State Forest, 8km. s.e. At nearby Herberton (19km. south-west) there is a winery and an historic village with over 30 restored buildings, and at Tolga, (5km. north) there is a peanut factory, a woodworks and craft shops. Malanda, 25km. east, has a market every 3rd. Sat. of the month, and the Jungle Interpretive Centre at the Malanda Falls Conservation Park on the outskirts of town. There are many crater lakes, walks, rainforest areas and things to do around Atherton. A letter or phone call to the Information Centre will give you plenty of ideas.
