The Frontier Camel Farm on the Ross Highway, south-east of Alice Springs, across the Heavitree Gap causeway,
or the John Blakeman Bridge is one of Alice Springs most popular attractions. the farm is 4km east of the roundabout on the south
side of the road. The farm has camels available for rides and safaris, a museum of cameleering equipment, historical photographs and memorabilia. The first Alice Springs Camel Farm was started by Kurt Posel, and taken over by well-known Centralian camel man, Noel Fullarton in the 1970's. It was designed to give locals and visitors an opportunity to see the role these unusual beasts performed in the 50 years prior to the railway arriving in 1929. Until then, nearly everything came to the Centre by camel train from Oodnadatta. Urged on by their Afghan masters these 'Ships of the Desert', could carry great burdens over long distances, and were ideally suited to the isolated conditions. Camels were also used extensively by the early explorers of the region. The Frontier Camel Farm specialises in rides, safaris and dining. Short rides are available daily from 10.30am to noon and additionally, from 1.00pm to 2.30pm between April and October. The cost is $10.00 adults and $5.00 children (5-12). A special family rate of $25.00 is available and pensioners and students can ride at $9.00. All prices include GST and entry to the Camel Display. The Camel Display will tell you all you ever wanted to know about camels in Australia. Their physiology, personality, peculiarities and their status in todays society. Entry to the display only is $6.00 adults and $3.00 children. A family pass is $12.00. Camel Ramble The Camel Ramble is a ride along the Todd River and departs the farm daily from April to October at 8.30am and 2.00pm. and from November to March at 8,30am and 3.00pm. Cost is $49.00 adults and $27.00 children (6-12), and includes transfers, camel ride, camel display and camel shop. Camel safaris Other safaris including a home cooked dinner at the camel farm and a tour of the date gardens at $95,00 per adult, and a Breakfast safari leaving at 6.30am ($65.00) are also available.
